Terry Maley Lecture: How the Yellowstone Hotspot Dominated Northwest Geology for 56 Million Years

July 11, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm

The presentation will begin with the first evidence of the Yellowstone mantle plume
some 56 million years ago when it was offshore western North America and created the
huge oceanic plateau called Siletzia. We will follow the hotspot track through time and
space as well as explain how it may have caused such diverse and widespread volcanic
and tectonic events that dominated the geology of the Northwest for the last 56 million
The Yellowstone plume has left a linear progression of magmatic and tectonic events
along the track of a fixed hotspot extending from Siletzia in the Coast Range to the
Yellowstone plateau in Wyoming, a distance of almost 1,000 miles.

Pre-registration is required. Click on this link to register.
