Field Trip to Grimes Creek
August 7, 2022 @ 7:30 am - 5:00 pm
Randy Harrison will lead a full day field trip to Grimes Creek to pan for gold. Plan to meet at the Museum, 2455 Old Penitentiary Road in Boise at 7:30am for an 8:00am departure. We will caravan to Idaho City Visitor Center for a short travel break and further information. Then we’ll continue to the mining claims via unpaved Forest service roads.
The altitude of the mining claims is about 7,600msl located on Grimes Creek. Grimes Creek size at the claims is about 20ft. wide and 2ft. deep with a fall rate of about 7% (a little swift) with brushy sides. The side hills would be great for metal detecting but are steep. Access to the river is by a trail along the river. There are some trees offering shade but limited. There are no bathrooms or trash service at the claims. The use of a small limb saw or machete would be useful. No power equipment can be used due to the access. Pans, classifiers, buckets, shovel, gravity sluices and the like should be used.
You can keep any gold that you find!
